Why are We so Fascinated by Celebrities?

Why are We so Fascinated by Celebrities?

Posted on 31 Dec 2009 at 6:15pm
Reda Jichi asked:

As a writer for http://www. interestingcelebrities.com I am prone to ask myself what it is we find in celebrities that’s so damn so fascinating; why do i do this job, and why do people like reading about them? I mean, sure, it’s fun, it’s culture, but what’s really beneath that? Our fascination with celebrities i find, stem from two main factors:

A. Inspiration:

This is perhaps the most positive reason one can come up with for why we find celebrities so damn fascinating. Let’s face it, we all love a good rag-to-riches story, we all love hearing about the guy or gal who come from so and so with little cash flow, but dreamt big and persisted enough to make it happen. We love hearing about college drop-outs who felt whatever line of business they were set up for wasn’t their true calling, and they laid it all down on the line to pursue something even bigger. And obviously we love hearing this stuff, because a majority of us are rather dissatisfied with our own careers and we look elsewhere for that inspiration or change. It is a common philosophical principle that we find it easier to project or attribute our own values to an outside model or person and follow through with finding out and modeling that person or entity. The ubiquitous presence of celebrities these days via the media pretty much insures this. And it’s more so a case today, as it’s become fashionable for celebrities to endorse certain causes; fashionable to be an activist that is. Given this, we will always admire those who perpetrate the change that we wish for in this world.

Make no mistake about it, celebrities are the mythical figures of the modern time, and that they are human makes them all the more appealing and identifiable. As such, it’s only natural to find inspiration in such people and to learn from them, even if the images of certain people presented are in many of cases false, mis-attributed, or imperfect. But therein lies the negative flip-side to this coin; A lot of people will be quick to backlash certain celebrities at the sight of a single human flaw, no matter how small or big, because that flaw easily manages to tarnish an all too clean image. “With great power, comes great responsibility” and no one really likes knowing that their favorite hero screwed up, cheated on their spouse, or committed a a felony that any average human being might be tempted to pull off every once in a while. That’s really the reason we’re so fascinated by scandal, isn’t it? It’s a case of, “I believed you and you let me down.” No one likes knowing that those on the top of the ladder can be just as imperfect as those on the bottom, and the more cynical of us will take pleasure in that fact. It’s that fascination with what it’s like to be up there on the edge that fascinates so many people, considering that many believe that such folks have reached a certain peak of human achievement, even if one was to point out that that no such ladder exists in the first place. But still, it is human nature to go ever-higher and we need models.

Entertainment:

This is most obvious factor in our fascination with the topic. To discuss this, we might as well discuss why we watch movies, listen to music, or watch sports. Plain and simple, because it’s Fun! It’s amusement. It fills the time, it’s finding distractions in, not only the arts, but the artists themselves, who have quite uniquely developed that such that they themselves have become works of art; and in many cases we learn from this. Because like I mentioned earlier, we like to forget our own troubles and we like to project it outside, and in so doing, we attribute these feelings of good times and fun to the people involved with making these activities, and this also leads to the above-mentioned inspiration, good or bad.

How often do you find yourself, that whenever you’re impressed by a good movie, a good actor, singer, basketball player etc. you surf the net for sites and videos, finding out more about that person, his/her ideas, values and life. Hell this is even something, a lot dating-gurus point out these days, that women love Brad Pitt, not primarily for his looks but for the characters he plays on-screen. I am not, though, saying that these celebrities are void of talent; their talent is a big part of who they are; their ability to make us laugh or cry isn’t something that can only be attributed to their created personas, but their real personas. It had to have come from somewhere after all. That’s why it’s often suggested that people emulate these characteristics and talents. It’s not really pretending. One of favorite movies of the year, was “Ratatouille”; I’m not going to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but when you do, keep in mind that notion of “not pretending”. Those who have seen the film must have already grasped what I’m talking about here. Just keep it mind.

In the end, our fascination with celebrities is really an observation on society, but more importantly an insight into our own human nature and ourselves. That’s really why we’re prone to often neglect that local community problem and instead read about the latest celebrity headline. Because we innately relate to celebrities, in the same manner that we relate to others and selves. Knowing others, is in a sense, knowing ourselves, and this can be a good or bad thing depending on your own perspective of the world. But either way our fascinations are always a reflection of our tastes and selves, and we’re always prone to find like-minded people fascinating, so there’s really no shame in our knowledge of other people’s lives, especially not them whom we admire.

Fashion Forward: What Teens are Wearing.and Why

Posted on 07 Dec 2009 at 6:44pm
Evan Levy asked:

urprise no one that Lori, 13, generally wakes up at 6:00 am to plan her outfit for the day. Or that she often checks in with her two closest friends. But according to * Tracy Fontaine, a New York City elementary school teacher, in about a year or so, she may well stop doing that.

“In middle school kids want to be like each other,” explained. “They want to fit in with the crowd, not stand out. Quite often, by the time they hit high school, they’re more willing to branch out and be more independent in the way they think–and the way they dress. They usually have a larger peer group and more defined interests.”

For moms whose kids will only wear Abercrombie polos or a certain style of Levis jeans, that may be hard to believe. And while that behavior may not disappear entirely (Hey, so you’ve never coveted/worn/saved up for a certain designer label?) teens sometimes feel like they have more options as they get older.

One reason may be that as kids get more confident, they don’t feel the need to stick so closely to what they think others want them to wear—they’re more likely to opt for what they want to wear.

“There are so many influences today it’s hard to know where or how kids get their ideas,” admitted one Westchester mom. Trends move so quickly—from TV shows, celebrities, movies, raps stars–it’s hard for adults to follow.

It’s equally hard for the teens themselves sometimes. “My friends and I like to read the fashion magazines to see what’s out there, but we also like to look on certain websites that carry clothes but also show pictures of celebrities and stuff,” admits Diana, 14. “Each season there are usually these really influential shows and you kind of get your cues from there.” But she also admits that it’s hard to keep up—financially as well as fashion wise. “You can’t buy everything,” she laments. “But for some people it’s really important and they’ll, like, judge you if you wear the wrong thing.”

James, 15, who mostly wears polos and khakis or jeans, says he likes Abercrombie shirts not just because it’s fashionable, but because he likes the range of colors and the fit. He swears that if blindfolded, he could tell the difference between his favorite shirt and a different brand. (We have yet to put it to the test.)

Some brands seem to have enormous staying power (Uggs anyone?), but the ante is also continually upped, as teenage girls aspire to a new Marc Jacobs bags or the newest style of Juicy this or Junk Food that. Since characters in TV shows such as “Gossip Girl” are excessively fashion-conscious, that often translates to real life. (Never mind that the show is a fantasy, as emphasized by a number of moms.) It doesn’t seem to matter–they’re the arbiters of cool, and cool often means status labels and high prices.

In an era when entire magazines are given over to shopping or what celebrities are wearing, it’s hard not to be assaulted by it at every turn, and for teens, already insecure, to feel like they have to follow along in order to fit in.

Many kids—especially girls– find trying to keep up to be hugely stressful (as do their parents, thank you very much.).

“I sometimes wish I wore a uniform!” admitted one girl sheepishly. But kids want to be in the know, to be perceived as hip and aware, to be in the vanguard, or at least the group trailing closely behind–of what defines the look of the moment. Of such stuff is teenage life often made, as they struggle to figure out who they are and how they want to be perceived.

Yet pity the poor parents, for whom trends often have unintended consequences:

“I don’t mind the layered look my daughter goes in for,” one suburban Connecticut mom explains. “But the problem is that it means so much more laundry!”
