As a writer for http://www. interestingcelebrities.com I am prone to ask myself what it is we find in celebrities that’s so damn so fascinating; why do i do this job, and why do people like reading about them? I mean, sure, it’s fun, it’s culture, but what’s really beneath that? Our fascination with celebrities i find, stem from two main factors:
A. Inspiration:
This is perhaps the most positive reason one can come up with for why we find celebrities so damn fascinating. Let’s face it, we all love a good rag-to-riches story, we all love hearing about the guy or gal who come from so and so with little cash flow, but dreamt big and persisted enough to make it happen. We love hearing about college drop-outs who felt whatever line of business they were set up for wasn’t their true calling, and they laid it all down on the line to pursue something even bigger. And obviously we love hearing this stuff, because a majority of us are rather dissatisfied with our own careers and we look elsewhere for that inspiration or change. It is a common philosophical principle that we find it easier to project or attribute our own values to an outside model or person and follow through with finding out and modeling that person or entity. The ubiquitous presence of celebrities these days via the media pretty much insures this. And it’s more so a case today, as it’s become fashionable for celebrities to endorse certain causes; fashionable to be an activist that is. Given this, we will always admire those who perpetrate the change that we wish for in this world.
Make no mistake about it, celebrities are the mythical figures of the modern time, and that they are human makes them all the more appealing and identifiable. As such, it’s only natural to find inspiration in such people and to learn from them, even if the images of certain people presented are in many of cases false, mis-attributed, or imperfect. But therein lies the negative flip-side to this coin; A lot of people will be quick to backlash certain celebrities at the sight of a single human flaw, no matter how small or big, because that flaw easily manages to tarnish an all too clean image. “With great power, comes great responsibility” and no one really likes knowing that their favorite hero screwed up, cheated on their spouse, or committed a a felony that any average human being might be tempted to pull off every once in a while. That’s really the reason we’re so fascinated by scandal, isn’t it? It’s a case of, “I believed you and you let me down.” No one likes knowing that those on the top of the ladder can be just as imperfect as those on the bottom, and the more cynical of us will take pleasure in that fact. It’s that fascination with what it’s like to be up there on the edge that fascinates so many people, considering that many believe that such folks have reached a certain peak of human achievement, even if one was to point out that that no such ladder exists in the first place. But still, it is human nature to go ever-higher and we need models.
Entertainment:
This is most obvious factor in our fascination with the topic. To discuss this, we might as well discuss why we watch movies, listen to music, or watch sports. Plain and simple, because it’s Fun! It’s amusement. It fills the time, it’s finding distractions in, not only the arts, but the artists themselves, who have quite uniquely developed that such that they themselves have become works of art; and in many cases we learn from this. Because like I mentioned earlier, we like to forget our own troubles and we like to project it outside, and in so doing, we attribute these feelings of good times and fun to the people involved with making these activities, and this also leads to the above-mentioned inspiration, good or bad.
How often do you find yourself, that whenever you’re impressed by a good movie, a good actor, singer, basketball player etc. you surf the net for sites and videos, finding out more about that person, his/her ideas, values and life. Hell this is even something, a lot dating-gurus point out these days, that women love Brad Pitt, not primarily for his looks but for the characters he plays on-screen. I am not, though, saying that these celebrities are void of talent; their talent is a big part of who they are; their ability to make us laugh or cry isn’t something that can only be attributed to their created personas, but their real personas. It had to have come from somewhere after all. That’s why it’s often suggested that people emulate these characteristics and talents. It’s not really pretending. One of favorite movies of the year, was “Ratatouille”; I’m not going to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but when you do, keep in mind that notion of “not pretending”. Those who have seen the film must have already grasped what I’m talking about here. Just keep it mind.
In the end, our fascination with celebrities is really an observation on society, but more importantly an insight into our own human nature and ourselves. That’s really why we’re prone to often neglect that local community problem and instead read about the latest celebrity headline. Because we innately relate to celebrities, in the same manner that we relate to others and selves. Knowing others, is in a sense, knowing ourselves, and this can be a good or bad thing depending on your own perspective of the world. But either way our fascinations are always a reflection of our tastes and selves, and we’re always prone to find like-minded people fascinating, so there’s really no shame in our knowledge of other people’s lives, especially not them whom we admire.
(People.com) — The ink’s barely dry on the divorce filing between Sean Penn and soon-to-be ex Robin Wright Penn, but the actor didn’t waste time getting back on his feet with new girlfriend Jessica White in New York City.
On Friday night, Penn, 49, and White, 25, had dinner at Hotel Griffou (both ordered the chicken and drank vodka) before heading to the Mercer Hotel.
“They were holding hands. They seemed really into each other,” a source said. “She was laying on him. She was laying on his shoulder. They were lounging around. He seemed really into her.”
The next night, Penn and his Sports Illustrated swimsuit model companion, who met at a birthday party at Kid Rock’s house last month, arrived hand-in-hand at Abe & Arthur’s in the Meatpacking District for model Noemie Lenoir’s birthday party.
“They are together all the time,” a source said. “They are pretty serious together. She wants to get serious with him and it seems like he is really into her too.”
Penn had previously been spotted out with model Petra Nemcova in 2008. The following year, when tabloids reports linked the Oscar-winner with Natalie Portman, Portman made it clear they weren’t an item.
“Sean Penn is a friend and colleague,” she said at the time. “The reports that we are romantically involved are completely untrue.”
The actor and Robin Wright Penn announced they were divorcing last August after a 13-year marriage with many ups and downs
The Playboy boss filed legal papers to finally end his marriage to former Playmate of the Year Kimberly Conrad Hefner earlier this month (Sep09) – 11 years after the couple split.
Now the mogul has explained he waited to legally dissolve the union “because of the children” – his youngest son Cooper turned 18 on 4 September (09).
He explains, “Now is the time. I stayed married not because it was a marriage – the marriage ended in 1998. I stayed because she wanted me to.”
The 83 year old is seeking to pay $20,000 (£13,000) to his ex in monthly spousal support as part of their divorce settlement.
The former pin-up filed a lawsuit against Hefner in August (09), seeking $4 million (£2.6 million) she maintains she is owed in accordance with their prenuptial agreement before they wed in 1989.
Happy birthday, Catherine Zeta-Jones. You are turning 40 this month, joining an exclusive club of women in show business who are marking the same milestone this year.
Think big names like Renee Zellweger, Jennifer Aniston, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Cate Blanchett.
It’s a birthday many actors — but especially female stars — in Hollywood would once dread, hide and agonize over.
At an age where men could comfortably play heroes and lovers in the prime of their life — and could do so for many years to come — women often found themselves starting to be cast in different roles.
(One example: “The Graduate,” where 36-year-old Anne Bancroft played a frustrated “older woman” trying to seduce Dustin Hoffman, who was just six years younger than she at the time.)
No wonder some stayed mum about their age, but this generation of 40-something female entertainers is different.
They’re holding birthday bashes, embracing the big four-oh and staying as busy and famous as ever. Their faces grace magazine covers, their bodies are the envy of women decades younger and their careers seem to be going strong.( source CNN)
Katherine Heigl’s publicist has confirmed to CNN that the actress and her husband, singer-songwriter Josh Kelley, are adopting a baby. It’ll be their first child together — adopted or otherwise.
No details were provided by the publicist, but the website RadarOnline reports that the couple’s been trying to adopt for about six months, and that the baby is a 10-month-old girl from Korea. Her name is reportedly Nayleigh, and her nickname will be Leigh.
The star of “Knocked Up” and TV’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is following in her own parents’ footsteps: her sister Meg was adopted from Korea. Earlier this month, various blogs and entertainment newsites reported that Heigl was taking a leave of absence from her role of “Dr. Izzie Stevens” on “Grey’s” to film the romantic comedy “Life as We Know It.” Hmmm… maybe she got the time off instead to prepare for her new arrival? What do you think? ( source CNN )
